Ms. Kvaavik will be one of six expert panelists participating in an upcoming public policy and diversity forum sponsored by the National Association of Women Business Owners of New York City (NAWBO-NYC).
Since 1975, the parent organization NAWBO has helped women grow their businesses by sharing resources and providing a single voice to shape economic and public policy. NAWBO-NYC, the Big Apple’s local branch, has been the collective backbone of the city's 330,000 women business owners.
Over the years, the chapter has blossomed into a powerful advocate offering bi-monthly networking and educational programs centered on issues concerning business development. In addition, the chapter boasts an active and committed diversity and public policy committees that seek to make a mark on legislative agendas—both locally and statewide.
Their upcoming public policy and diversity forum on November 13th titled “Immigration in America” addresses how small businesses are handling the immigration situation in these tough economic times. “Immigration in America is a double-edged sword.” states Padma Vaidyanathan, Vice President of Diversity for NAWBO-NYC. “Many citizens feel we need an immigrant workforce, while others feel that immigrants are taking away jobs from Americans, especially in a tight economy. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.”
Kaarina Kvaavik, a native of Sweden with a multi-cultural background, has been a highly acclaimed and renowned speaker in the Globalization/Localization industry for over 18 years. She speaks five languages and possesses an adept awareness of cultural nuances around the world. Prior to joining ABLE, she served on the management teams of Lingoport and VistaTEC, and directed international product management groups at PC DOCS and Dragon Systems.
Kvaavik comments, “I am truly honored to be included as a panelist for this distinctive forum. As a unified voice for women of diverse industries and backgrounds, this incredible organization seeks to effect social, political and economic change. Because NAWBO-NYC hosts such events and actively encourages its members to address issues that affect them, policymakers listen.”
Other panelists include Dr. Francine Moccio, Director of the Institute for Women and Work at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations; Peter J. Smith, Special Agent-in-Charge, Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”); Parker Waggarman, Esquire, Attorney; Elizabeth J. “Betsy” Weber, co-Founder and Director of Edge Development Group, Inc. (EDG); and Renee Levitt, Renee Levitt Design and The Pratt Institute.
NAWBO-NYC’s Immigration in America Public Policy and Diversity Forum will be held on Thursday, November 13th, from 5:30pm – 8:30 pm at Smith Barney, 31 West 52nd Street, 23rd Floor in New York City. The evening includes a Wine and Cheese networking reception, which will be held after the discussion. To Register: Visit
