Background:
Key Energy Services, Inc., the nation's largest rig-based well service company, is the leading provider of diversified energy operations to the world's top oil and natural gas companies. Key's services include well maintenance and intervention, oilfield construction and drilling, work-over services, fishing and rental tool services, oilfield trucking, fluid services and disposal. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, the organization has operations in all major onshore oil and gas producing regions of the continental United States and internationally in Argentina.

Key Energy also develops and delivers one of the most intensive curriculums in the well services industry, which includes training on their leading technology software known as KeyView® System, a satellite-enabled rig data capture system which tracks vital data collected on-site from its services equipment. This information enables the company to run operations more efficiently and in turn provide better service to their customers. With Key Energy's global market expansion, the need arose for the KeyView® System training modules, which expound upon their software's user interface, to be localized unilaterally for both Mexican Spanish and Argentina's Spanish.

Challenge:
A common error made by companies presenting to a global market is that they do not anticipate the essential requirements for localization while developing English content. This mindset creates challenges that not only increase costs, but delays the release of a product or materials into international markets and produces inconsistent documentation. Localization has specific writing requirements, not only from a cultural or marketing perspective, but also from a technical point of view.

ABLE Innovations' services were enlisted to manage the Content Globalization and Translation process. The initial project began with the need to revise and localize the training manual (consisting of 9 modules), for customers in Mexico and Spanish-speaking clientele residing in the state of Texas. The project was then expanded to include Argentina, of which two reviewers were incorporated-one from Argentina and one from Mexico, in the attempt to merge the project into one translation.

Results:
ABLE developed a project plan and review schedule to analyze the English source content and to scope content revision needs. In addition, ABLE provided a complete risk assessment and identified all contingencies with the project. Document templates and style guidelines were created, along with a terminology list (in the source language) and a glossary (in the target language).

Content optimization, as it relates to formatting, punctuation, grammar, graphics, etc., was also employed to streamline the English source content by ensuring translatability, country-neutral language, translation memory efficiency and consistency in terminology, which resulted in the reduction of actual word count.

ABLE also conducted extensive quality assurance throughout the content optimization and localization lifecycle. These project investments include all mandatory requirements to edit, format, localize and release (on-time) the required language versions as a final deliverable to Key Energy Services-at a significant cost savings!
