ALTA Platform™: Safety Reimagined

If you are reading this, you are probably all too familiar with the myriad of problems associated with the highly routine task of transfers. This physically-intensive task exposes nurses and caregivers to chronic, and often career-ending injuries. Staff are often very busy and over-worked - the coordination to transfer further adds to staff burden, and is a source of inefficiency.

At Able, we are re-imagining how transfers are conducted. We believe that:

  • Nurses should be able to provide care without "breaking their backs"

  • The patient must feel secure and dignified - even in a vulnerable state

  • The status quo is unsustainable

  • Any viable solution must simplify workflows

The ALTA Platform is a ground-breaking technology that allows a single caregiver to conduct effortless transfers.

Why we Developed ALTA

ALTA Platform™

At a time when hospitals are facing acute staff shortages, the ALTA Platformallows healthcare workers to do more with less while protecting them from career-ending injuries.

Our array of sensors coupled with an elegant user interface adds a layer of safety and protection, while making the device easy and intuitive to use.

The Status Quo of Transfers

  • Majority of transfers today are conducted by manual methods

  • Manual methods require multiple staff to exert back breaking effort

  • At UnityPoint Health, 10 nurses injure themselves transferring patients every year

  • Transfers require finding and waiting for 2+ staff - not sustainable with staff scarcity

  • Staff often take on additional risk, attempt to transfer without help, and are injured

  • Lifts, swings and lateral pull solutions require additional steps for caregivers

  • Patients find conventional methods to be highly undignified

  • Why would I use ALTA over existing methods?
Existing methods require multiple caregivers to exert back-breaking effort. Current methods are unsafe, and it is difficult to enforce a "standard of care". Current transfer methods also require multiple staff to be present, which is increasingly difficult as facilities are increasingly short-staffed. The ALTA allows a single operator to transfer patients independently, in a safe, effortless and automated fashion. This eliminates the burden associated with recruiting additional staff. Moreover, the ALTA is easy to use and its intelligent systems add additional layers of safety and redundancies that promise to reduce injuries, prolong careers and also offer greater clinical efficiency.
  • How does the ALTA increase clinical efficiency?
In majority of transfers today, there is a downtime associated with recruiting a team that can adequately and safely conduct transfers. Lack of available resources often result in long wait times to recruit staff, and often staff over exert themselves by doing transfers without adequate resources. As patient acuities rise amidst increasing shortstaffing, these issues are sure to get worse. The ALTA eliminates the need for additional staff - allowing one operator to independently conduct the same transfers. This significantly reduces the wait-time and promises to increase clinical throughput and profitability. One example of where such features could be highly desirable is placing the ALTA in/by an inpatient CT Scan suite.
  • Is it complicated to use?
No. Designed with caregiver input to be easy to use. Requires minimal training. Intuitive.
  • What are the patient set-up steps involved before transferring a patient with ALTA?
Simply place the device beside the bed/stretcher/table where the patient is and press a button to initiate transfer automatically. System adjusts for bed height, mattress compression, checks that it is safe to start and transfers the patient.
  • How long does it take to transfer a patient with ALTA?
It takes 1 caregiver just 2 minute so a total of 2 minutes. There are no set-up steps or changes in the existing workflow of caregivers.
  • Can ALTA transfer bariatric patients?
Most patients that require help with mobility can be transferred. ALTA can transfer patients weighing up to 350 lbs.
  • Does the patient need to be able to bear weight or help themselves in some way to be transferred?
No, even patients that are completely immobile can be transferred with ALTA in an effortless and safe manner.
  • Are there risks of injury for the patient or caregiver when using ALTA?
No, the solution takes all of the back breaking effort out of the transfer process.
  • How many transfers can ALTA conduct on a full battery charge?
    Over 50!
  • Where do I store the ALTA?
ALTA can be kept in the foot print of a regular stretcher in a nearby space that is convenient for retrieval as needed for patient transfers. Product development has begun on a version of ALTA that has the ability to fold itself into half of its footprint to be stowed in a smaller area.
